So much to write about so little time. Let’s start with the Supreme Court.
Now no Democrat would have nominated Kavanaugh. And, as an old friend pointed out to me, he supported Trump only because he wanted a more conservative court. That resonated because I supported Clinton for that reason alone. Actually, at least Trump found someone qualified for the job. I think Kavanaugh ought to be questioned closely on issues of presidential power and settled law, but failing any disqualifying activity, Democrats should support him. I know, I know, the Republicans behaved horribly when they refused to give Merrick Garland even a hearing. It was Mitch McConnell’s worst hour, but responding in kind somehow doesn’t seem appropriate. Also, elections have consequences, so all of the people who decided it didn’t matter whether they voted are finding out how wrong they were. Maybe it will make people more accountable for their own lack of citizenship instead of blaming the politicians for everything.
Now, let’s move on to Trump on his world tour. It is remarkable how he can alienate friends effortlessly with no real end game in mind. He left NATO allies shaking their head in a mixture of fear, disbelief, and disgust. He then lied about what happened in the meetings (I know, pointing out things like this gets old) and we had to rely on the French President to tell us what actually occurred.
Then, it was on to London to create more problems for the British Prime Minister. He gave an interview criticizing her approach on Brexit and then claimed it was fake news when the story ran. The paper, a Murdoch owned tabloid, produced a recording of the interview, but our President said, in effect, “who are you going to believe, me or your lying ears?” And then, when asked about a hard or soft Brexit, it was abundantly clear he had no idea of the difference. Sad, but consistent. After all, if you really don’t have to know things to be great, why bother learning?
Of course, being the showman that he is, our leader saved his best for last. Fawning over Putin and ignoring all facts and expert analysis, he was shockingly awful even for him. Why, our own Marshall Petain, Paul Ryan, was even moved to point out that Russia is trying to hack our election process as an adversary. One would like to think such hints would not be necessary but, alas, they are. I can only remember how Obama was attacked as foreign “weak” with our adversaries. I wonder where all the critics are now? Perhaps they are with Rand Paul who thought that Trump’s press conference with Putin was just dandy. Paul is, of course, the principled Libertarian who supports a constitutional amendment to ban abortion.
I don’t know. Maybe those of us who find this behavior unsettling are just a bunch elitists who don’t understand what is going on in the world. I fear that is not the case. I keep having this recurring dream of President Trump as a seven-year-old with a hammer in a house full of antiques. As he goes about destroying what is there and has been for a long time, his supporters look on benignly saying “boys will be boys.”
