Well, now that things are settling down, I felt the need to write again. Impeachment went as expected. I finally realized that when Trump said he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Avenue and it wouldn’t change anything, he was talking about the Republicans in Congress. And, of course, Susan Collins gets the “get real” award for believing the experience of impeachment might change the President’s behavior for the better. What world is she living in? And while I am at it, the faux outrage by Republicans over the tearing up of the speech by Nancy Pelosi was amusing. When did they become such snowflakes? A President can call people names with impunity, ignore every norm of behavior for a President, but this was unseemly?
Moving to the Democrats, there are several things worth noting. Some of us foresaw the demise of Joe Biden long ago. He will limp into South Carolina and Super Tuesday, but will mercifully retire after that. The most interesting takeaway from the New Hampshire primary was that Bernie is probably a doomed candidate. Let me explain. It was always thought that Elizabeth Warren’s support would keep Bernie from growing. Indeed, the conventional wisdom was that Bernie had a high floor but a low ceiling and he probably would peak out at under 30%. Turns out that the conventional wisdom is actually correct in this case. Warren’s support collapsed in New Hampshire, but Bernie didn’t get much of it. Instead, it went to Pete and Amy. So, as soon as the moderate lane clears out with either Pete, Amy or Bloomberg, they should be able to consolidate a majority of Democrats going forward. I know this is not the current thinking among the hand wringers and the bedwetters in the party, but having confidence in the people of this country is generally a good bet. I assume they will recognize and correct their mistakes, starting with voting Donald Trump out of office. We’ll see. Just because I was right about Biden doesn’t make me certain.
