So, what happened on Tuesday? Well, it sure surprised me. Having declared Biden politically dead, he proved me very wrong. It was a complete surprise to many of us. However, there are several things that happened which were key elements in producing the results we saw.
The first and perhaps most important was the decision by the Bloomberg campaign to allow their candidate to participate in the debate before Nevada. His performance was so bad that it undercut hundreds of millions of dollars worth of ads. And, the fact is, they could have just not debated as they weren’t on the ballot in Nevada or South Carolina.
Second, the success of Bernie in Nevada spooked the rest of the party. Also, Pete and Amy needed to show that they could attract minority votes and failed to do so. Biden came in second but his vote tally of 19% was half of what the polls showed two weeks before. So, as they headed to South Carolina, only Bernie had momentum and Biden had Jim Clyburn.
Turned out that Bernie in a rerun of 2016 could not attract Black voters. Pete and Amy couldn’t either and Clyburn delivered a big victory for Biden. So, when he looked up last Saturday night, he had no money, no organizations in Super Tuesday states, but he was the one who had momentum and name recognition. And then the voters decided to be strategic and vote for the imperfect messenger who they thought could defeat Trump.
Biden should win the nomination and then defeat Trump. I didn’t see this coming, but sometimes things just happen without any planning.
Since the President is wrapping himself in the “Coronavirus is a hoax” flag, it could even be a blue wave. My fondest hope is that if Trump loses, his acolytes in the US Senate will not see his behavior as the road the Presidency in 2024 and beyond. You listening, Tom Cotten, Rand Paul, Lindsey Graham? I doubt it.
Great analysis
