To impeach or not to impeach, that is the question. Trump deserves to be impeached and convicted. His constant incitements, built on four years of mendacity, which ultimately led to the riots at the Capitol this week surely justify this action. And, if he had more than a few days left in his term of office this would not be debatable.

However, I think there is a better way to deal with this. A resolution of censure passed in both houses of Congress would be unprecedented. It would allow those who want to cleanse their souls of the past sin of looking the other way, an opportunity to stand with their peers and announce their belief that Trump’s actions were appallingly undemocratic.

I know for some this is insufficient. However, in a tip of the hat to our new President, let’s get this nightmare behind us and give those who want a new approach a chance.

Trust me that the Matt Gaetz’s of the world will vote “no,” as will a number of the others who seemed to think the Trump way worked for them. But, most Republicans would concur and it would be an institutional rebuke to a man who tried to destroy any institution that would not bend to his will.

Oh, and if that still isn’t enough for some, you can always add Cruz and Hawley to the resolution. That might even get Tom Cotton on board.
