The undercurrent of the movement to impeach Trump is the struggle inside the Republican Party. Will they be a pro- or anti-Trump party? There really is no middle ground.
For those who want to see Trump disappear, impeachment is a two-sided coin. If successful with Republican votes, the pro-Trump elected officials will accuse those supporting impeachment of disloyalty, RINO-ism and probably secret socialism. Currently, the party apparatus is controlled by Trump loyalists and, so far, they seem to be continuing to drink the Trump Kool-Aid.
The Republican electeds who find Trump unredeemable (for some, a newly minted disdain) need to decide if they can wrest the party back to a conservative framework with core values intact and reject the cult-like following and followers of Trump.
None of this is easy and Democrats are not a factor in this. It is the greatest internal party struggle in over 100 years. As a Democrat (most of the time), I am cheering for the anti-Trump wing to prevail. We need serious policy debates by serious people who recognize the same problems but may differ in solutions. That is what makes America exceptional. Trump tried to end that, but he failed. Now, let’s see what the Republican Party can do to reclaim its place as part of American greatness. Hang on to your hat, it will be a wild ride.
