So, yesterday, when they impeached Trump (again), we heard from members of Congress comparing the objections to the electoral college votes for Biden to objections launched by Democrats in 2000, 2004, and 2016. I think some clarity is in order.
First, in none of these instances was the driving force behind the objections the losing candidate. They had all conceded. In the 2000 challenge, no Democratic Senators joined the objection. In 2004, Senator Boxer joined House objectors, but it failed in the Senate on a vote of 74 to 1. In 2016, no Senators joined the objection.
Those are facts. It is also important to note that, with the exception of the Florida recount, which was unique, no large numbers of elected officials claimed the election was rigged as did Trump along with his wingmen Cruz, Hawley and McCarthy. No one called upon state legislatures to overturn their state’s vote, nor threaten any Secretary of State. No one encouraged a crowd to assemble in Washington to object to the counting of the electoral college votes nor did anyone tell them that Congress was stealing the election from them. These are also facts.
I understand that many of these members of Congress who, hours after the Capitol was attacked because of the lie they perpetrated about the election being stolen, still voted to steal the election results from the voters, would like us to forget what they did. Now they want to unite the country after igniting and encouraging deep divisions based on lies because they thought it was good politics.
Even our President is now the peace and harmony guy according to the video he released yesterday.
For starters, where were these unity seekers after Charlottesville? After family separation and children in cages? Where were they when we needed a realistic and comprehensive approach to Covid? They were spreading lies about the situation and protecting the most serial liar ever to occupy the White House.
Now Trump will slither off to whatever swamp he can find that will have him. The Republicans will have to decide who they are, and Biden will need to begin to right the ship of state.
I am pleased to see that, as predicted, Trump is planning to stiff Giuliani on his legal bills. It couldn’t happen to a better person, and while Trump may have some regrets, his history of not paying his bills remains constant. Given his financial situation, Deutsche Bank will no doubt have the same result.
Actually, they all deserve each other, and America doesn’t deserve any of them.
