Well, it’s finally time to comment on the No Labels organization and their approach to fielding a Presidential candidate in 2024. It is clear to me that this is just another Washington vanity project. To my mind, if they were serious about changing either the way we select our Presidents or the current dysfunctional two-party system, I believe they would go about it very differently.
First, they would create a competition, encouraging candidates to compete to run with the No Labels banner rather than being selected by six Washington insiders.
Secondly, instead of coyly talking about their own campaign and candidates only if the two parties don’t produce candidates who they believe are acceptable, they would attack the current dysfunction of both national parties in the Presidential nominee selection process head on.
Essentially, they have no place in trying to be Washington players while simultaneously behaving as revolutionaries. If you want to create a third-party wave in this country, you need to be bold and in being bold you need to reject the two parties as having outlived their usefulness. Unfortunately, this is not what No Labels is about. Rather, it is about disgruntled insiders in Washington, having a project where they receive attention, and they can go to people such as Kirsten Sinema, Joe Manchin, John Huntsman, Joe Lieberman, et al, and make them more important for a brief period of time. It is sad because it will further keep a serious attempt in reforming our political nominating process from taking place and allow the current two-party system to produce another Trump-Biden contest.
Speaking of which… the Trump legal strategy is clear. He hopes to be able to put off all of his trials for as long as possible with one of two results: First, if he’s re-elected President, he will, of course, pardon himself. Second, if he is unsuccessful at re-election, he will then negotiate a universal deal, which will keep him from going to prison. Either way, he will be able to have it the way he’s always had it. Maybe No Labels should take that up as a cause.
