I recently wrote that, to be a successful Speaker of the House, one needed two qualities (that, incidentally, Kevin McCarthy lacked):

  1. Be believable; and
  2. Be able to count.

McCarthy possessed neither skill.

Now, we have the misfortune of watching Jim Jordan, an election denier, fail on both counts (pun intended). His current idea is to have another vote so he can demonstrate how many members of the Republican caucus dislike him. The number keeps growing.

I have written about how the Republican Party, that many of us previously knew, is no more. They have indulged their own extremists as a preferable route than trying to make a deal with the Democrats.

What is obvious to everyone not in Washington is that no Republican can get 218 Republican votes to become Speaker. Ergo, what to do?  How long will the disfunction of the majority be allowed to paralyze the government before the grown ups send the kiddies to the playroom where they can fundraise and follow Steve Bannon, et al, and finally make a tough deal with the Democrats?

It is the only way out of the mess they created. The only question is when, not if.
