After seeing the troubling polls out of all of the swing states, I am sure the results of Tuesday’s elections were a respite for Democrats. It is important that the wrong lesson isn’t drawn from these results.

President Biden, who has been a very good President, trails Trump… and any other Republican. These polls were taken in the same final week when these successful Democratic campaigns were closing the deal. Biden was the club the Republicans used to try to win. The failure of that tactic is not a sign that Biden is popular.  Rather, the Democrats who won, as was the case in 2022, won in spite of his personal lack of support that was reflected in the swing state polls.

As David Axelrod said recently, it is up to President Biden to decide if he is the best candidate to stop Trump again. Because Biden, like Truman, has a great legacy if he chooses to pass the torch to the next generation. And also, the cost of losing to Trump is beyond calculation. I am hopeful the President and his advisors examine the situation with the concern for the country which reflects his lifetime in public service.
