It is now clear that there is only a narrow path for Trump to be denied the Republican Presidential nomination. Haley needs to win New Hampshire and South Carolina. The odds of that occurring are slim and none….and slim has left town.
In reflecting on how the outcome could have been different, I noticed that George Will blamed “progressive prosecutors“ who have indicted Trump. It is hard to blame prosecutors for charging someone who they believe has committed multiple felonies with the complete disintegration of what used to be the Republican Party.
I do believe if Trump’s opponents had said from the beginning that anyone who cannot accept the results of an election is disqualified to hold office, no other recitations on his noxious behavior would have been necessary. Being charged with crimes or not, when you refuse to accept the results of an election in a democracy, even if you feel that things were unfair, you don’t qualify to run again.
Richard Nixon in 1960 and Al Gore in 2000 were both disappointed and had legitimate grievances. However, they decided the country was more important than they were. No chance of that happening with Trump.
