I guess we have to be happy that Speaker Mike Johnson did what he was supposed to do. I do think that it is important for people to realize what the norm has become for considering legislation in the House.

The Republican conference adopted a rule, known as the Hastert Rule (named after former Speaker Dennis Hastert, who, incidentally, is a convicted pedophile). It says that if a majority of the Republicans in the conference oppose a bill it cannot be brought up for a vote. That means that, currently, if 111 Republicans don’t want something considered (think debt ceiling, Ukraine, keeping the government open, etc.), it violates the rule if it is brought to the floor so the 435 members can vote on it.

Seems hard to believe that you can do your job with such a rule. At the very least they ought to name it after someone not currently in prison.
