Don’t look now, but things are in the works for Marco Rubio to possibly be Trump’s pick for VP.
The machinations necessary for this to happen require that Rubio change his residence from Florida as it is not possible for a President and VP to both be from the same state. Some may remember that Cheney moved his residence back to Wyoming before becoming the VP candidate with George W Bush.
This is more complicated than it may seem. Rubio was reelected to a 6-year term in 2022. If he resigns, which would seem logical since he would have to change his residence, there may be an election for the remaining 4 years of his term.
While everything would be easier if Trump were to move his residence to New Jersey or New York, that won’t happen.
The thinking is that Marco becomes the front runner for 2028 and Ron DeSantis is pushed aside. It also keeps Marco in the hunt for Governor if he is selected and Trump loses.
The downside for Rubio is if Trump wins is he has to be his VP… and, to make matters worse, if Trump loses, Rubio may be blamed by Trump for the loss.
Given the history of Mike Pence, I must say that Marco is either a glutton for punishment or the smartest guy in the room. If it is the latter, Trump won’t like it and, in the end, neither will Marco.
