The rush to defend Biden by his friends and staff, unfortunately, misses the point. If Trump is a threat to democracy, then not having the strongest candidate against him is unacceptable.

Anyone who believes Joe Biden is the strongest candidate must not have watched the debate last Thursday night.  It was heartbreaking to see a fine man in decline as he attempted to convince American voters that he is up to the task as President for four more years. He clearly is not.

As to the options, there are several things to consider. First, the delegates are not legally bound to support Biden. Secondly, most of them are good Democrats whose support of Biden is based on the fact that he’s a Democratic president who has done a good job. It is not an emotional attachment as we have seen with other Presidents.

At this point, Biden is clearly the weakest candidate against Trump. There is a list from Witmer to Shapiro to Pritzker to Booker and the list goes on. Any of these people have a better chance of beating Trump than Biden.

If Trump threatens our future, how can we act like it is okay for Biden to remain in the race?

History will look back on this moment and judge (very harshly) those who may allow Trump to return to power.
