With all of the angst about the Supreme Court decision on Presidential immunity, I think we all need to take a step back and consider several things.

First of all, the idea that a President is protected when he is acting in his official capacity makes sense.

Secondly, no President (except Trump) has behaved in such an egregious manner that this decision raises questions rarely contemplated in the past.

And, let’s be honest about this idea that everyone is equal when it comes to our criminal justice system. The Donald Trumps of the world have always had an edge in treatment over the average person.

That’s not to say that this court acted wisely. They fell into the trap of going too far. They could have held that there is no absolute immunity, but that certain acts are immune and that the factual determinations of the trial court would sort out individual actions.

We are trapped in the Trump dumpster fire where he destroys those norms of decent behavior with impunity and then clings to the courts to protect him.

The only silver lining in all of this is that Obama and Biden can’t be prosecuted by Trump and his Justice Department if he wins.

All in all, not a great week for the level of decency we have always regarded as basic to our country. This is but another notch in Trump’s belt as he pursues his ever-present crusade to undo the values of America.
