There are several Presidents whose political career has been connected to their dogs. Franklin Roosevelt claimed his enemies also denigrated his dog, Fala. Richard Nixon saved his political career in 1952 with what became known as the “Checkers” speech. Nixon was accused of accepting inappropriate gifts. He denied wrongdoing and said that his dog, Checkers, was a gift to his little girls and would not be returned because of how much his daughters loved their dog.

Now Trump has added a whole new spin on dogs and politics. He and his minions have claimed that Haitian refugees in Springfield, Ohio, are eating the dogs and other pets of the longtime inhabitants of this community. The Republican Governor of Ohio has said it isn’t true as have city officials and police in Springfield. Of course, JD Vance claims that these claims of pet eating may be true because someone (there is always an anonymous someone) said it on television. Hard to refute that.  As a footnote I would add that the Haitian immigrants in Springfield came to this country legally.

I think, however, the next brewing immigration problem may be that we are letting in too many dogs and cats from around the world. The dogs are there to feed the Haitians and the cats, of course, are for the childless women.

I guess Trump and Vance have figured out the problem. How could anyone not vote for them?
