Well, he finally got there. After being supported by and cavorting with antisemites and Holocaust deniers, we heard from Trump that if he loses it is the Jews’ fault. Blaming things on the Jews isn’t exactly a new concept.

Republican friends keep reminding me that, after all, Trump’s daughter became Jewish and his grandchildren are Jews. And look how much he supports Israel!

Let’s be very clear. Trump talked about the “very fine people” on the side of those who demonstrated and chanted “Jews will not replace us.” And, has embraced “replacement theory.” He has had the support of white nationalist groups for which antisemitism is at their core. In fact, some supporters on January 6th wore “Camp Auschwitz” shirts. Whatever the truth is, they all think he is an antisemite, which is one of the reasons they support him.

Now, he has told this group of Jew haters that if he loses it is the fault of the Jews for not supporting him.  Given the rise in antisemitic incidents here and around the world, what does he think will happen if he loses?  But, of course, he doesn’t really care. Just as the Haitians in Ohio are fair game for disgusting lies which creates threats to their community, now the ancient tropes about Jews are in play for Trump.

For those Jews who think Trump will protect them from his most vile supporters, I suggest they review the same hopes prominent Jews in Germany and Russia had under Hitler and Stalin.  Regardless of the outcome of the election, Trump has given permission to blame the Jews. Just the kind of person we want as President.
