Well, the Democrats caved. They had three choices:

  1. First, as James Carville advised in an op-ed, roll over and play dead. Don’t offer help, and let the Republicans do what they could with their majorities.
  2. Secondly, they could have offered a few substantive changes in exchange for their votes.
  3. Thirdly, they could give in to the bullying, give a speech and go home.

Spoiler alert: They went with option #3. The most cowardly thing of all.

The Dems said they were worried about what Trump would do with a shuttered federal government. Considering what he is already doing, giving him the power of a funded year on his terms was the worst of all decisions.

Trump only respects power and force. You cannot behave “responsibly” when your adversary laughs at you when you do. Just ask anyone who has ever done business with Trump. I cannot understand how this is not obvious.

Clearly, if the Democrats are going to be deserving of support, they need new leadership in the Senate. It is time for Schumer to go home. I hope the Democrats in the Senate wake up before it is too late, if it isn’t already.
