Am I the only person who thinks it would be hard to not remember if the President of the United States referred to African and South American countries as “shithole countries”? Yet, that is what Senators Tom Cotton and Sonny Purdue would have us believe. I wonder if perhaps Trump had referred to Arkansas and Georgia (their respective states) as shithole states, they would have remembered or even been offended? After all, they are frequent apologists for Trump and, besides, it doesn’t matter what he said. Only his opponents care and they use his words to undermine his immigration policy which they support which is essentially sending everyone who they can round up back to their “shithole” countries.
Lindsay Graham was there and said he told the President that his reference was un-American. Whew. I’m glad he did. After admiring his independence over the years, his recent striving to please Trump so he could perhaps replace Tillerson at Foggy Bottom was unsettling, to say the least. Just when it looked like he was going down for the third time, he found oxygen and perhaps the gag reflex kicked in (despite so many of his fellow party members having lost it).
And, of course, we have Speaker Ryan, our own Marshall Petain of Vichy, France, fame, who said the President referring to most of Africa as comprised of “shithole” countries was “unhelpful.” Unhelpful? It is unhelpful if you forget to close the screen door and a fly gets in. It is this hideous ignoring of the obvious that so frightening. Trump will not change his behavior. Can you imagine Ryan’s reaction if Obama said any of the offensive things that routinely flow out of Trump’s twitter feed?
I recently spoke with a Republican friend who tried to compare this to Clinton’s actions with Monica Lewinsky while he was President. I told him I recall Republicans in the House impeached Clinton over that. Did he think that was a good solution for Trump? He then told me that it turned out that Clinton wound up being a good President after all. While I disagree about how good a President he was, I asked my friend if he thought that Trump’s insult and racist comment would ensure that he too would be a good President. My friend wasn’t sure. Well, if Trump keeps this up, I am confident he will not be just unwelcomed in London, but in many other parts of the world, too. I guess he will always have Russia.
Well, it’s too good a line to be left on the table: “He will always have Russia.”
