While I haven’t written for a while, I was waiting for things to settle down. Since that appears to be a long way off, I thought I should weigh in on matters large and small.
First, of course, is the impeachment inquiry. Clearly, the President will be impeached by the House. His strategy of stonewalling Congress is already crumbling. More importantly, there will be sufficient evidence to raise the question, and if he decides not to allow witnesses or documents to go to the House, it will be like the defense resting in a criminal trial without calling any witnesses. The result will certainly be the same, but if he appears to be hiding things, it will only hurt him in the polls.
Several months ago, I thought impeachment was appropriate. I think the second volume of the Mueller Report makes the case, however very few of us read it. It did create the atmospherics for impeachment when the Ukraine adventure became public.
I am not surprised to find our friend Rudolph Giuliani slithering around this mess. It has for him the perfect combination of money, lies and sleaze. He is in for some interesting times and I suspect he will join the long list of Trump acolytes in need of a pardon.
I would anticipate more whistleblowers to come forward in the next few weeks and, what is now a close call with the public, will morph into a reluctant acceptance of Trump’s culpability by all but the 5th Avenue crowd. I would rather be a Democrat in the House from a marginal district than a Republican Senator. Unlike the Clinton and Nixon impeachments, the stain from this White House has gone far beyond the usual suspects. Just ask Secretary Tillerson.
Interesting and I could not agree more. Thanks for writing this.
