Well, it looks like it’s time to comment on what is going on.

The Democrats appear to be stuck on Biden.  Apparently, his age and lack of appeal to those under 40 have not yet attracted a viable alternative into the race.

The Republicans, meanwhile, are finding it hard to get past Trump. I know that, for many, Ron DeSantis is the “new new thing,” but he is beginning to crater before he formally enters the race.

It turns out, DeSantis’ willingness to walk away from Ukraine was a major strategic error.  Many Republicans are ready to back off, but those appear to the Trump voters. It seemed that DeSantis was an electable alternative to Trump who could also excite the base. Sadly, for him, what he did with his Ukraine comment is open a lane for another Republican to give full-throated support to Ukraine and get those who were moving away from Trump (the donor and corporate class) a place to land. DeSantis has forsaken Reaganism and what is left of the Party that is not enamored of culture wars and Trump will have to look elsewhere. This should encourage people like Pence, Pompeo and Christie which will make it easier for Trump to prevail.

Taking a look back at the 2020 Democratic race, there was also a major strategic blunder in that Michael Bloomberg participated in a debate that he didn’t need to as he wasn’t on the ballot in Nevada or South Carolina. We now know how that impacted his candidacy for President. I suspect when the autopsy on DeSantis’s campaign is done, his unforced error on Ukraine will stand out.
