It is time to have a real conversation regarding the election. As we all know, a rematch of Biden and Trump was not wanted by a majority of Americans. Yet, last Thursday night, there they both were demonstrating, each in his own way, why he shouldn’t be elected.

Trump was his usual bombastic self. Exaggerating and lying with impunity. He has no shame nor is connected to the truth, even in a casual way. If what he says turns out to be true, it is a coincidence.  He demonstrated his feral-like instinct, blaming all of the problems Americans face on undocumented immigrants. His attacks on Biden were as nasty as ever. The concern of having him back in the White House was reinforced.

On the other side, we have Joe Biden.  He, unlike Trump, has a career in public service. His Presidency has been a success in many ways. He got us through COVID-19, got unemployment below 4 percent, added 15 million jobs, and created a coalition to aid Ukraine in its fight against Russia.  Still, problems remain. His approach to the border didn’t work and we continued to spend too much money which helped fuel inflation.

And, let’s face it, he will be 82 years old in November. And, he looks it.

The lingering question regarding Biden is, “is he up to four more years on the job?”  The answer on Thursday was a clear no. Now we see the Democratic enablers race to act like it was a bad debate performance. That it was. And, it was so much more. It made questions about his acuity, fairly or unfairly, front and center in this campaign. Defending him as better than Trump is easy. Acting like he is clearly up to the job is not.

Somewhere along the line, we must be honest about this. We know that Trump and his enablers are not, but that hardly seems to justify re-electing Biden.

The stakes in this election are too high to worry about the feelings of the Biden family. He needs to step aside. Joe Biden has almost always acted in the best interests of America. Now is no time to stop.
