Kamala Harris, having quickly and deftly secured the nomination of her party, now faces a few months filled with both challenges and opportunities. While there is much being written about her disastrous presidential campaign of 2019, it would be foolish to assume someone as smart and astute as Harris didn’t learn from it.

As VP, she has had to act like the duties she has been required to assume were wonderful and that any of the nasty stories leaked by Biden aides didn’t exist. She did it as dutifully as any Vice President in recent memory. Now things have changed.

It is often said about great leaders that they rise to the occasion. Franklin Roosevelt was referred to as a rich lightweight. Harry Truman was called a machine-created politician and Ronald Reagan was dismissed as an over-the-hill actor. They all rose to the occasion and demonstrated leadership that many thought them incapable of. This is the moment for Kamala Harris.

Forget her gaffes, all politicians and others have them. She now is galvanizing the Democratic Party and offering hope to all Americans who fear another Trump presidency. She will not be the easy punching bag for Trump that Hillary was. Keep in mind that Kamala is still only a fuzzy image in the minds of most Americans. She can change all of that. Donald Trump is the perfect foil for her. Let’s see if she can rise to the moment. If she can, she can save the nation from Trump and perhaps be yet another leader whose skills were only visible at the necessary moment.

Also, as a man, I would say it is time for a woman president. We men have screwed things up long enough.
