In 1938, Neville Chamberlin, then the British Prime Minister met with Adolf Hitler in an effort to limit the aggression of the German leader. He sold out Czechoslovakia and returned to London with a signed agreement from Hitler. He declared that it represented “peace in our time.”
I am reminded of this as I read the MOU signed by Trump with the Iranian regime. Clearly, we are giving Iran almost everything they need, and we are getting only what we had before the war, and certainly before the Obama agreement was ended during Trump’s first term. Oh, and along the way we are ignoring our ally in this war, Israel, which again should signal to the world how reliable a partner Trump is.
When Chamberlin returned from his meeting with Hitler, Winston Churchill said, “Chamberlin had to choose between war and dishonor. He chose dishonor, now he shall have war.” In the case of President Trump, he had the choice of honorable negotiations or war. He chose war. Now we as a nation must endure dishonor at the hands of a President whose view of the world begins and ends with himself.
